So lately I’ve been hearing more and more about this fucking book: The Game. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s about a guy who infiltrated a secret society of pick-up artists. By the end of the book, he has mastered a “technique” for picking up women and is a master pick-up artist himself. The book came out awhile ago and I will admit – I read it. It was a really funny and entertaining read.
But recently, I have started noticing that a significant amount of guys in my club are actually running the game. One of the techniques mentioned in the book is something called “peacocking” which means you wear a goofy hat or scarf or piece of clothing to attract attention. I am now seeing 3 or 4 pretty square looking guys wearing feather boas – per night!
In addition to that, I have been noticing more and more that guys are using a similar method for striking up conversations with women. I think in the book it is called a “neg.” This basically means you come up and say something cocky and semi-negative but not too mean. The idea is that girl will want to know why you “aren’t interested.” There is then a pattern for the conversation with a little back and forth, some bullshit stories told by the guy to increase his worth and then he tries to the girl to a secluded area for some hand-holding and one-on-one conversation.
This routine is becoming so obvious that frankly I am getting bored with it. I’ve decided I am going to read The Game again so I can get the terminology down. Then when I see a guy using it, I am going to point out: “Hey, great job on Step #3, bro. Time to roll out the double neg-blah-blah. High five!” (I think this will actually improve my tips.)
It’s strange to me to break the game of male-female relationships to such an orchestrated thing. I’ve never had trouble with girls, but I’ve always just kind of steamrolled in with no real clue what I was doing. But that was part of the thrill of it… uncharted territory!
So this question goes out to the other bartenders out there – or those of you who spend lots of time in clubs and bars – are you noticing The Game all around you?
Now if you are a girl – are you picking up on this? Does it bother you? Are you completely oblivious to The Game? I really want to know. Use the comments link and let us know!
