Let’s talk about doing shots. There is nothing like hammering down an intoxicating thimbleful of your favorite alcohol with a group of friends. A shot will take you to the next plateau and bring about that familiar cloudiness we all cherish. What else can make a gremlin desirable, transform a dirty porcelain bowl into a pillow or turn an inconspicuous location into a urinal? Now a shot doesn’t have to be an exercise in alcoholism, it can also be a tasty treat!
For me I’ve always hated hard liquor shots. Rum, Rye, Vodka, Gin, Grappa… Gross! Tequila is the exception, especially a fine Petron, lemon preferred. It is really the only hard liquor I can withstand, never mind actually desire.
As for the less ‘manly’ spirits, I used to enjoy a good Jagermeister. Maybe there was a night of excess I can’t recall but today that stuff just tastes like Buckley’s Cough Medicine to me – ‘Tastes bad but it works.’. I’ve had quite a bit of Southern Comfort in my day and i can still force a few down but the sweetness just screams migraine-style hangover. As a SoCo alternative I don’t mind the similar but smoother Disaronno.
Now onto the Petron Black coffee liqueur. This tequila based shot still sits at 35% alcohol so it definately packs a punch. When you first down the chilled black liquid you feel the shotgun blast warming head rush you normally expect from Tequila but with a delightful coffee aftertaste. Instead of having to neutralize your pallet by chugging a beer, you are going to want to savour the flavor of this decadent alcohol. With such a unique taste I certainly wouldn’t want to overdo this shot, especially with its expensive price tag but for now order me up another round.
What is your favorite shot?

That’s great to hear! We held off buying this over the holiday because it seemed like an unusual taste combination. We’ll definitely give it a “shot” now!
January 13th, 2009 at 12:37 am

@Sam
I did the same thing – seems too odd to try. Might be worth a go though – I’m a big coffee fan.

I don’t know if I could agree to just taking a shot of something that has the aftertaste of coffee, that might make me have to drink down a beer instead of wanting to take all the taste in. But yeah, my personal favorite is still and will be: Jagerbomb.
January 19th, 2009 at 1:16 am
i know that if you will take heavy alcohol then harmful our body

I have to agree with the coffee stuff I tried it to over holidays and in eggnog you will be stumbling in 3 without knowing what hit you. do Irish car bombs count as shots? I otherwise only drink tequila when I go to my favorite Mexican restaurant.

I reckon being a bartender would be a good job for those that enjoy working with people and alcohol
January 27th, 2009 at 6:50 am
Tequila is only so the only shot I ever do.

Well, my days of taking shots are long over but the only ones I liked before were either Captain Morgan or Jack Daniels.
January 29th, 2009 at 11:29 pm
I have not done this in quite some time, seems like my youth is gone.
The poison apple martini comedyman posted though sounds delightful, apple pucker and sweet sour! MMMM!

coffee sounds kinda gross in a shot especially if your going to be drinking other liquors though i never liked baileys either, patron and cranberry juice is one of my favorite mixed drinks and is easy to make
February 6th, 2009 at 1:27 am
I prefer dessert wines, but when I want something strong I like Vodka Lemon Drop.

I was one of those guys that said “I hate tequila shots”. But now with patron so widely available they are one of my favs. I also love margaritas made with Patron Silver.

February 11th, 2009 at 10:35 am
Well the comment that you post is a nice shot, talking about the shot and coffee :-b
for me drinking coffee every day is a nice shot because coffee has a Anti Aging Supplement…But many products that has an anti Aging..like Anti Aging Products i research on /vitaminsinwater.wordpress.com/ But the best among the best shot is yout start your day with smile and end up with happiness.

First off, you have a beautiful site. But like you, I can usually only stand Tequila shots (not a fan of shots in general). Just found your site through Google, and wanted to say that I now in love with your blog. I just subscribed and can’t wait until your next post!
February 18th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Sweaty Palms,
Thanks for the note. I also look forward to my next post
February 18th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
I really wish I could get the hang of this stuff. I believe it is absolutely true, but I am somewhat…scattered. I know I would be more successful if I could just get things in order and focus! Thanks.
February 21st, 2009 at 9:10 am
I love Tequila Rose… it’s the best ever. I haven’t tried Patron Black, but from the way you describe it, i’m sure it’s great. Perhaps, one of these days then.
February 23rd, 2009 at 12:18 pm
I concur with ComedyMan21, excellent…
February 24th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

February 26th, 2009 at 8:36 am
Re Lorraine,
Make sure it is the original one
)
February 26th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
You know what shot I used to really like, Jekyll & Hyde…I don’t think they make that anymore, but the 2 color shot was pretty cool, and the layers were a nice change (it started off burning, but then the red (cherry) soothed it all away with a nice flavor).
As for Patron, I’m not sure you can really go wrong with any Patron shot…
February 28th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Thank you for the info. it looks like a great place to start!
March 3rd, 2009 at 5:43 am
I am sure that bartender is the best job for someone that likes working alcohol and people..
March 3rd, 2009 at 9:44 am
I remember my fist black patron shot, best shot I ever had. It was chilled, dark, thick, and tasted great. It is a bit pricey and not to easy to find (at least not in my area) but very well worth it.
March 3rd, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Gonna have to try this. Thanks!
-Jeff
March 3rd, 2009 at 2:32 pm

I wanna be a bartender since I school…the situation makes me to ignore my dream…
March 20th, 2009 at 7:58 am
Hmm. Does it have the distinct tequila flavor then settles to coffee?
I’m def. going to have to try this tonight.
Also, have you tried the new vodka by Patron? I can never remember the name.
March 25th, 2009 at 12:03 pm

April 4th, 2009 at 3:02 pm
Man ….reading your post simply reminds me of my good old twenties
) Perhaps Im bound to try this Patron Black
April 5th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Oh, please don’t call me a whimp… I’m a very busy mom with limited energy at the end of the day, ie. at party times….
I used to drink alcohol, but these days it take away my last little bit of energy…. and I can ill-afford that.
Sooo, I want to ask you if you could device a TASTY non-alcoholic or low alcoholic version of a straight up? ??!!
This way, I won’t feel so left out at fun parties….
Thank you in advance,
Rose

April 25th, 2009 at 12:11 am
I prefer dessert wines………..
April 26th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
There’s nothing wrong with “less manly drinks,” aka girly drinks, although I agree that Jagermeister is nasty. I’m a fan of the dirty girl scout or pineapple upside down cake when it comes to shots.
April 27th, 2009 at 6:27 am
Tequila and coffee! not the obvious mixture, cannot really imagine the taste. Clean tequila shots with salt and lemon will always get the party started, but the patron sounds interesting.
May 1st, 2009 at 5:14 am
what the hell, someone send me the real link, i have a locked iphone it needs to be activated. I used simpleiphoneunlock.net My iPhone is now unlocked now!
May 3rd, 2009 at 9:05 am
I love Milagro or Olmeca, it’s my favorite tequilla
May 11th, 2009 at 11:11 am
Yes, some hard liquor shots are hard to do. However I hate when you go somewhere and order a shot, but instead they give you a half cup full of liquor and call it a shot when its really like 4..
May 16th, 2009 at 5:18 am
I buy this kind of stuff in holidays at a poker night
IT is great.
May 16th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Thanks for this post
May 20th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

I don’t worry about it as Google
June 10th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I used to pound jager too, but those were the good old days. I’ll have to give Patron black a shot, but it doesn’t sound like something that’s going to be tried twice.
June 17th, 2009 at 2:36 am
I love patron silver
June 23rd, 2009 at 12:50 pm

July 1st, 2009 at 7:35 pm
This sounds very interesting. I’ll definitely have to give it a try!
July 9th, 2009 at 6:08 am
One of my favorite shots! Great to do with a large group of girls.
July 19th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
First of all, before you write about a product, you should learn how to spell it. Just a thought…
July 19th, 2009 at 7:31 pm
I love Jaegger too ! Especially JaeggerBombs
Will try this Patron Black soon !
July 27th, 2009 at 12:51 pm
Funny that so many prefer Patron. It’s produced by Paul Mitchell the hair guy. It’s not even available in Mexico where it definitely would not be anywhere near the top. There are so many tequilas out there that taste soooo much better. I would recommend for people to start discovering actual great tasting tequilas that may have not poured so much $$ into marketing in order to sell a name. After all that is all you are paying for when you order Patron…My favorites include Tequila Alquimia Anejo (USDA Organic) and Don Eduardo…hard to find but worth the chase!
July 27th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
Can’t beat a shot of black sambuca, that’ll kick start your night (usually into a messy one though ha). Failing that get some flaming drambuies down you.
July 28th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Shot me Please..:)
July 30th, 2009 at 5:07 am

I love patron silver

The good guys over at Patron Spirits are banking that spirits drinkers want to take their coffee flavored drinks with the same kind of variety as their coffees. Nobody walks into a Starbucks and expects the coffee to be sweetened. Some want it with milk. Some want it black. Some will want it sweetened. Some may also prefer pure, clean coffee flavors, while others like some unusual twists to tantalize the tongue. The aromatic and flavor differences between Patron XO and any other coffee flavored drink in the liquor store is quite dramatic, and just as there are folks who take their coffee black, there are folks who will appreciate the unusual drinking experience that Patron XO brings to the bar.

my drink of choice = grey goose hypnotic splash of soda water
September 12th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
This is your favorite really? I haven’t been able to get hooked on it. I am a tequila drinker though, but this really just isn’t my style.. not sure why. I have heard great things about it, but haven’t been able to jump on the train.
September 17th, 2009 at 10:13 am
Thanks for this type of interesting article. Though drinking alcohol is harmful for health, sometimes taking coffee with little alcohol is interesting to me.
September 24th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
My favourite shot is also TEQUILA with lemon + salt. In French, it is called TEQUILA FRAPPEE. But I like also B52, it is whisky liquor (Bailey’s) + Coffee liquor (Kahlua) and the original thing is that the shot is flambéed! That is so gorgeous.
