For many, bartending is a college gig, something to do part time, or a great way to meet attractive members of the opposite sex. Angelo Cammarata on the other hand, has rang the bell for last call and hung up his mixer after 77 years of service.
Now 95, he has been bartending at Cammarata’s, a bar he started since the stroke of midnight, April 7, 1933. What’s even more amazing about this, is that this was the very second prohibition ended in the United States. Check out more on an interview with him here.

I find that you can quickly judge a bar by the age of the bartender. A young guy with a chotchy haircut? You’re going to overpay for a poorly made drink. An old guy dressed in an understated way? You can order anything and have it made right. The only Old-Fashioned I ever had made right at a bar was by a bartender no less than 60 years old.

77 years of service as a Bartender truly he creates an example and record for other bartenders. Young people choose this line for additional source of income for a very short period. I do not think anyone can easily break Mr. Angelo record of bartending service.Cheers for Mr.Angelo .

Amazing, 77 years behind the bar. Many a story he must have. My only wish for this great guy, is that he is able to enjoy his retirement. Sounds like he is a very active person and going to work each day/evening is a main reason he kept waking up each morning to take on the day.
October 20th, 2009 at 6:19 am
Hiya,
Just thought I’d let you know that your site looks kinda’ weird in my web browser. I’m running flock browser on a teeny-tiny netbook screen so thats probz whats causing it. Probably not an issue for most people but I thought you might want to know.

I’m gonna get flamed for this but I personally rate a bar by how shady looking it is and how good the bar food is. If it’s a hole in the wall dive with no windows and plenty of dark corners and they servce a great burger I’ll be a lifer. Also they should have Firestone DBA.

Wow, I’ve got to say, I can only hope that at that age I still love, heck even like what i’m doing. I think it helps that this gent also owned the establishment that he bartended at. I simply couldn’t imagine doing it for someone else. Not for that long anyways.
Now I’m off to read the interview, I have to know what this guy’s all about. Thanks for the post.

The problem with retirement is that you have to find something to do. And if you did only one thing all your life, it’s hard to adjust. A lot of times you go back to what you were doing, but put in less time.
March 22nd, 2010 at 3:23 pm
I hope I’m still sitting on the other side of the bar after 77 years
