So the other day I was watching a show where a startup company was looking to bring to market a hangover patch (similar in concept to the nicotine patch) which would pump your body full of vitamins while you consumed alcohol, all with the purpose of reducing or eliminating a hangover. I was intrigued. Now, I have heard of hangover pills but they require too much work and with the amount of liquid you consume while boozing you are bound to be peeing out most of the beneficial ingredients. With a patch, you slap it on, the vitamins get absorbed throughout your skin all the while you can pound back drink after drink without worry. This makes sense.
After a search on the Internet I found a company called Zaca which is already marketing this kick ass concept. The cost is $19.99 for a 6 patches, with discounts available for larger purchases. At over $3 per patch it isn’t exactly cheap but it can be less than the price of even one drink at the bar. I figured if I was going to buy 12 drinks to make me feel terrible, the cost of one drink to make me feel better would totally be worth it.
After no deliberation I immediately went ahead and placed my order. Within minutes, I received an email from Mark of Zaca with some immediate, pressing concerns. Since I live in Canada and the product was shipping from the US he wanted to give me the heads up that my order may not arrive for St. Patty’s Day, which was just around the corner. Right then and there I could tell that I had made the right decision.
Approximately a week later (just missing my St. Patty’s boozefest) I was excited to receive my hangover patches in the mail. Of course, it didn’t take long to put those patches to a good challenge as the next Friday was yet another piss up. After cracking my first bevy I slapped a patch on my left shoulder and proceeded to party like it was 1999. An entertaining night flew by and after a solid dozen or so drinks I found myself stumbling home with a big slice in hand coming to a crash in my bed where the room spun me to sleep.
The next morning I awoke, still feeling intoxicated as the patches do not suppress alcohol (thankfully). After grabbing a cup of Joe and whipping up some eggs and toast I found my body really rebounding from the night before. Normally hangover + exercise = booze sweats + nausea but not today, nor any of the days that I have used the patch. I actually went for a solid 8 km (5 mi) run that day and felt great afterwards. After going through 5 sessions with the hangover patch now I can tell you the results are very consistent.
I do have one complaint, and its that I still feel the ‘blahs’ the next day. Those emotional lows related to depleted seratonin resulting from excessive drinking. After some research I wasn’t surprised to determine the patch is missing the ingredients that may have dealt with that issue. Here is a quote from a website talking about the effects alcohol has on stress / depression:
“Certain nutrients are needed by the body in order for it to manufacture chemicals that dampen anxiety. Alcohol causes depletion of vitamin B6 and Folic acid, the very nutrients needed for us t0 be in optimum psychological health enabling us to cope with stress. It also stimulates the release of the stress hormone adrenaline and interferes with the amino acid tryptophan which is used to manufacture serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical involved in sleep and mood regulation.” – http://stresshelp.tripod.com/id13.html
The patch has a lot of great ingredients but no B6 or Folic Acid (Maybe in the Hangover Patch V2???). Here is the 11 different organic ingredients who’s benefits in reducing your hangover are described here:
- Prickly Pear
- Milk Thistle
- Thiamine (B1)
- Lipoic Acid
- B5
- B3
- Taurine
- Lycopene
- NAC
- Magnesium
- Vitamin C
So in conclusion your hangover isn’t eliminated, but your body will thank you for wearing these patches while you drink. No longer will alcohol prevent you from eating a good meal, or exercising the next day. If you want to give it a go, try ordering the hangover topical patch from Zaca and post back to the blog to let us know how it worked for you.

Well the price of zaka isn’t that bad, I think I need to go for it, and give it a try for once at least, hope I ll get result out of it!
April 10th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
yeah I have heard of this.. still I don’t think there is anything better than drinking a half gallon of water before you fall asleep. I might have to pick this up though.. I’m sure it is a good addition..
April 10th, 2010 at 10:37 pm
That sounds logical and like a good idea, however the price isn’t light on the pocket

i thinking drinking lot of water will be a good idea.
some one recommends having lemon juice or black coffee. not sure if they works.

it’s nice to know that alcohol will no longer prevent me from eating a good meal
April 30th, 2010 at 6:31 am
As it has been said I think a lot of non-alocoholic beverages work best against a hang-over. Using those expensive patches seems silly when I’m sure there are pills with the same ingredients. So what if I gotta use the bathroom once or twice more often.

Wow, well I wish they had these when I was in college. I used those pills a few times but they never really worked to well. I know what you mean about the emotional lows the day after a night of hard drinking, I always hate that more then feeling sick the next day.

Fantastic blog, I just came across it and I’m already a fan. I recently shed 30 pounds in thirty days, and I want to share my weight loss success with as many people as possible. If I can lose weight then any one can. No matter what you do, never quit and you WILL attain every one of your weight loss goals!

Ha! I find the longer I’ve been out of university, the worse my hangovers are. You seem like a consummate pro – so my n00b advice may be unwarranted (and even more likely, covered in a previous post).
I have *never* had a hangover after consuming 500ml of gatorade before bed, and drinking a glass of water first thing on wakeup. Breakfast, coffee – and bam off to exercise.
Sure you may feel a little heavy for the first five minutes, but nothing a little increased bloodflow and oxygen won’t cure.
Thank you for the interesting, and entertaining article!

This must be the most craziest invention I have ever come across. I think a hangover patch is an amazing idea. I am going to order some to give it a go and have a really messy night and see what happen. I hope my VB6 doesn’t deplete too much though.

I heard also that alcohol depletes vitamin B+. And Guess what is very high in B+, yeast! Yeast makes alcohol and alcohol depletes B+. I have tried it and it works. I just eat a package of yeast with my last drink of the evening and do not get a huge hangover. If they added B+ to that patch I bet that would help tremendously.
May 28th, 2010 at 12:01 am
I always just drink one glass of water after every drink I have. Since I’ve started doing that, i’ve hardly ever had a proper hangover.
May 28th, 2010 at 1:26 am
I so hope this is true, it could seriously change my life. Unfortunately he doesn’t supply to the UK…. will try the yeast tho.

I think this is a great idea and I would have loved to have it for some of my holiday drinking fests, but I think it might be a little dangerous for someone who might be predisposed to alcoholism. Any ideas or feelings about that?
June 3rd, 2010 at 4:37 am
Sounds like a really good product that actually works!
Nice packaging too.
June 6th, 2010 at 7:19 am
While I’ve never found a drink to cure hangovers, I have found that taking a large dose of vitamin C and three aspirin before going to sleep after a night of drinking pervents me from waking up with one. This has also worked for my friends whom I told about it.

The Mexican word for hangover is crudo , which literally translates as raw and perfectly describes the state you can find yourself in after a night in Cozumel nightlife
There is some hard won advice to cure these cures:
“Bloody Mary with the lot, if you can eat try pancakes”, “eggs with very spicy salsa or chicken soup, hot & spicy”, “advil & 2 glasses of water before bed” “chilaquiles & aqua de limon”, “cheeseburger, find one, its worth the effort”, “flavored milk & sweet breads”, “just don’t drink, however that’s not practical so try not to sober up”, “drink corona, it doesn’t give you a hangover”, “menudo”, “find a hammock under a palm tree with a good book, this will cure anything”.

Hangover is not big matter to solve. If you are facing hangover problems with a brand then you can change the brand to another. Hangover does not occurs with each and every brand and type if wine you drink.

$3 a patch is way too expensive. You can get the same results naturally and for less by mixing:
1 cup coconut water (electrolytes)
1 mango (antioxidants and flavor)
1 bananna (carbs to absorb the alcohol)
1/2 cup blueberries (antioxidants)
Best way to make this fast is to use a juicer like the ones at brevillejuice.com, but if you don’t have access to a juicer, a blender is second best. Drink it before you go to bed if you can. I like to make a pitcher of it and keep that in my fridge before I go out so that I don’t have to do any mixing when I get home.

The best thing to do before a night out is to take a Multi-B Vitamin and drink lots of water. The reason for hangovers really is that the alcohol burns up all your vitamins and hence the headaches and sick feeling in the morning. Potassium and/or salt can be great for headaches too, as when the balance of these two go out, you can get headaches much easier. Hope this helps anyone out there to prepare!

July 15th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
I’m sorry, call me a “player hater”, but I don’t believe it.
A magical pill, or in this case a patch, which takes your hangover away. Now if only it will pay ‘Toothhater’ for the tooth lost while drinking.
I don’t believe this would work for me. Why? My explanation is two fold:
1st) I think I might live too large for this patch
2nd) I believe that my mind would over-do any benefit from the patch.
This is the same as my reasoning for avoiding drinks where “you don’t even taste the booze”: I want to feel the pain. It’s what keeps me from going too far too often. I want that reminder that says “maybe ending the night with a long island iced tea was a bad idea. I like having a big sign that says “Stop! The edge is near!” With alcohol, that sign comes in the form of a hangover or, in some cases, waking up on the toilet seat.
I just, as a professional skeptic, don’t believe this works. Furthermore, I wouldn’t want to use it for any reason other than an experiment. My opinion, like it or lump it.
Thanks for the great blog and the great post! Keep the experiments coming!

Hangover cure? Someone once told me marijuana is the key. They said that THC stands for “Total Hangover Control”, but I don’t know if I would recommend someone smoking an illegal substance to cure a hangover! lol Drink some water and go back to bed!
July 20th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
The best hangover cure: keep drinking.
July 21st, 2010 at 2:47 am
Add a “queue-step” to the process. This way, a user could create i.e. 25 project files and add all the files for the book and enter all information. All these projects then enter the queue. The user can then press “End session”, and AudioBook builder will begin building the audiobooks one after one. This should be relatively simple to add, as it requires no simultaneous processing code. Only a queue system.

I have always drank OJ after having a few cocktails to help replenish the liquids and get some vitamins back in the system. That, along with a huge glass of water and the head usually stayed together. It has been quite a long time since I was in college so they body does change over time, but that was the combination my roommate and I discovered.

“So in conclusion your hangover isn’t eliminated, but your body will thank you for wearing these patches while you drink.”
So if the product doesn’t eliminate hangover, then why is it marketed as such? In order to not mislead people, Zaca should be marketed as a “drink that will restore the nutrients lost from drinking alcohol beverages”. Just my two cents about the whole thing.
August 11th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
I tried the patch and while it didn’t make me 100% hangover free it make me feel like I only drank 3 or 4 instead of 13 or 14. Well worth the money for me.
August 16th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
This product would be worth it for a person who constantly likes drinking their butts off. Are there expiration dates on these patches?

The best cure is to drink a lot of water before sleepin, and gatorade in the morning
August 26th, 2010 at 1:46 am
Funny post, sleep it off in the morning, works for me.
August 26th, 2010 at 3:16 am
SO so many hangover cures though, but how many work? The only time I don’t have a hangover is with fresh air, just sleep outside or in a tent!! Winner!
August 26th, 2010 at 6:38 am
Nice!!!…I agree with drinking alot of water while drinking though, and gatorade or orange juice works well for me in the morning.
August 27th, 2010 at 2:40 am
A cost of 3$ a patch should be ok. Having all that booze and still getting away with your hangover is awesomely good.
August 27th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
i usually try to take 2 headaches & drink some water before i go to sleep, works for
August 27th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
I am amazed this patch works. I was always told that the biggest cause of hangovers was dehydration. Vitamins won’t solve that.
August 28th, 2010 at 6:30 pm
Wouldn’t it be much easier just to not drink so much?
August 29th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
omg im dying.. i’ve had the whorst hangover ever today… but u know what. i actually felt better by drinking a beer
August 30th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
As if Quadracentifiable wouldn’t give you much of a headache already! Been setting up this new website-builder and I have been having drinks last night. I guess difficult to pronounce words and alcohol don’t mix well. I’m having a hang over now and I’m looking for a cure!

Congrats with the 16 lbs that you’ve lost (and hopefully to never see again). The really good thing about WW and why it works is that their flexibility means that you don’t need to be as disciplined, which is the main problem that people have with diets.

Very nice. You can buy celebrex online….

I think you must take a bath to lessen or even keep away from hang over.
September 1st, 2010 at 7:25 am
The hangover patch ingrediants sound great but I think they should add to the instructions that a key factor is drinking plenty of fluids (Water). Dehydration is a major factor in hangovers!

Thx for this topic!

I am not sure whether to try these pills or deal with the hang over myself. Herbal cures certainly top my list when it comes to curing any problem or disease. I hope it provides the ingredients you have mentioned in the list and is not a fraud.
September 3rd, 2010 at 4:40 pm

I’ve tried the hangover patch and it works ok. Just have to put it on when you start drinking, and that’s it, it works for 24 hours. I love how it’s organic
September 5th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Great. But I wonder if the hangover patch could affect the contraceptive pill. Would appreciate any advice on the matter if anybody knows. The last thing you would want is to find the result of a late night of partying popping out 9 months later just to have spared yourself a hangover.

Really intrigued if this works better than water as that is by far the best cure I’ve found so far. May give it a go, cheers

I’ve used a prickly pear supplement purchased through VitaCost over the last few months, taking a couple of capsules just prior to an evening of drinking.
As far as I can tell, it does seem to make my hangover symptoms less pronounced. Rather than awaking the next morning with a headache, a little joint pain, and a sort of “blah” feeling in my skull, the prickly pear seems to alleviate all but a slight headache, if that.
I may be satisfied with my current supplement, but if my liver starts going down the tubes, I may need an upgrade!

A good cure for a hangover is to drink water before going to bed – downside is that you may wet the bed if you are really drunk

I loved your article thanks for sharing. Excellent photo I might add. Water the next day usually does the trick if you eat something like bread your stomach will start to fill full and that also helps.

It’s interesting to see that prickly pear is the first ingredient. I’ve tried using prickly pear juice as a hangover cure, but to no avail. Maybe the other stuff in the patch works with the prickly pear or something?
September 23rd, 2010 at 11:29 pm
These things really work, its stopping the liver from running and getting alcohole.
September 24th, 2010 at 11:22 am

Nothing that a few glasses of water wouldn’t do. Flushing out the systems is always a good thing. Great idea though.

October 8th, 2010 at 6:53 am
The problem with all products like this is the high costs – anything marketed as a hangover cure will cost 5 times as much as just the normal vitamins/minerals you can buy at a pharmacy.
October 15th, 2010 at 2:15 pm
I always hated hangover, I will definitely give Zaca a try.
October 17th, 2010 at 6:24 am
Interesting post, though I can’t say I’d ever actually pay for a hangover cure.
What I’ve found that works best is to make sure you drink a lot of gatorade before bed. If you happen to wake up before your alarm clock goes off, take a couple aspirins and a lot of water.
Another thing that seems to work for me is to eat spicy food before going to bed. This might not be convenient for you, but here in Thailand, spicy dishes are everywhere. Combine that with some gatorade and you’re good to go in the morning
October 19th, 2010 at 2:38 pm
Great article… with lot’s of useful tips… THANKS!
October 22nd, 2010 at 10:07 am
I still think the best way to prevent a hangover is to hydrate with water before I go to sleep and take two aspirins. Most of the hangover symptoms are due to dehydration.
